1st away win lifts Owls

Sheffield Wednesday secured their first three point haul of the season on their travels but with Championship games coming thick and fast the Owls will be sweating on news of three players who suffered knocks during the game.

The tireless Marcus Tudgay again showed exemplary work-rate which has been evident in his play throughout the season so far and scored a fine winning goal.

Wade Small, whose inclusion in the starting line-up was a little surprising, rewarded his manager's faith in him with an excellent solo equaliser.

Before those goals came just before the break the Owls had looked set to continue their dismal away form as Luke Varney gave the hosts the lead and they also squandered a number of presentable chances.

Despite having a lot of the ball in the second half Charlton couldn't create too many clear cut chances as the Owls tightened up at the back and Lee Grant wasn't forced to make the type of top class saves that had earned his side a point against Ipswich a week earlier.

However, with Nottingham Forest to come to Hillsborough on Tuesday evening the Owls may have to make changes to a winning side.

Midfielder Steve Watson was forced out of the game at the Valley with a groin injury in is a doubt while Wednesdays' attacking options may be limited with Jermaine Johnson and Wade Small also picking up knocks.

The victory over Charlton moves Wednesday into the top half of a very tight Championship table. Going into the midweek round of fixtures the Owls are in 9th place, level on points with the 6th place team but only three points ahead of Swansea who lie in 18th position.
