Advantage Owls at half-time in play-off semi-final

Sheffield Wednesday put themselves in pole position to qualify for the Championship play-off final after a fantastic night at Hillsborough on Friday.

Roared on by a sell-out home crowd Carlos Carvalhal's side took the game to their opponents from the start and although the visitors offered a threat from set-pieces the Owls fully deserved their 2-0 win.

Ross Wallace gave the home side the lead just before half-time when a sweeping move started by Westwood in the Owls goal resulted in the former Sunderland man cutting in from the right an unleashing a rasping low drive past the Brighton keeper from outside the penalty area.

Kieran Lee doubled the advantage with just under 20 minutes to go, swivelling superbly on a Forestieri through ball before finishing with aplomb in front of the Kop.

Brighton will bemoan their luck with injuries, having had to make 3 substitutions in the game influential midfielder Knockaert picked up an injury with around half an hour still to play meaning the visitors had to play the game out with 10 men but in truth the home side had been the better team up to that point.

The Hillsborough faithful created an atmosphere that will live long in the memory of those that were there and the 2000 fans that travel south on Monday will be hoping for more of the same as the Owls look to complete the job in the 2nd leg.
