Reports suggest transfer restrictions

News has surfaced this week that Sheffield Wednesday may be under a transfer embargo enforced by the EFl for the second year in succession.

Various national newspapers reported yesterday that the Owls may be under a soft transfer embargo and this has now been reported by local newspaper, The Sheffield Star. It is thought that the restrictions could be in place due to the fact that the club may not yet have submitted their 2017-18 accounts to the EFL - the club changed their accounting period earlier in the year but are yet to file the accounts with Companies House.

The soft restrictions that may be in place could be lifted as and when the accounts are filed and a number of potential free-transfer signings that have already been reported as being at a very advanced stage may be being held up as a result of this. The Star reports that a sale-and-lease deal on the clubs Hillsborough Stadium ground could be in the process of being finalised in order to ease concerns in relation to the EFL Profit & Sustainability rules but as yet nothing of this nature is showing on Land Registry records.

As the club are yet to comment on this matter all of the above is speculative and requires clarification. Wednesday were placed under an embargo between April and August 2018 but this wasn't formally revealed at the time for a number of weeks.
