Coughlan, an inspiration for the Home Park club in the last few seasons, is high on Wednesday's wish list and is out of contract next summer.

The 30-year-old defender is stalling on a new deal and with Wednesday set to pounce, Argyle are doing as much as they can to keep hold of the player.

Their chief executive Michael Dunford told Plymouth's Evening Herald: "We are still in discussions with Graham. You can't force players to sign new agreements.

"There is a wish within the club to see Graham stay as a Plymouth Argyle player but it takes two sides to reach an agreement.

"Graham said things publicly and that's for him and the manager (Bobby Williamson) to discuss."

Meanwhile, Wednesday have also been linked with a move to bring in Charlie Miller, who currently plays in Norway for Brann Bergen.

Scottish utility man Miller has also attracted the interest of Dundee United and Sheffield United but his contract does not end until 2006.
