Back from the brink

Wednesday got off to their usual bad start, conceding a goal inside the first ten minutes and to make matters worse, all of Wednesday's relegation rivals got off to good starts in Saturday's games.

At one stage, with Wednesday losing, obviously Leicester were winning, as were Coventry, Barnsley and Norwich, it looked like the Owls would be relying on WBA beating Southampton on Monday night just to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

The gloom mounted when Deon Burton saw his 1st half penalty saved but Bartosz Slusarski got the Owls level just before half-time with his first goal for the club and Steve Watson gave them the lead early in the second half following a bright spell from the visitors after the restart.

Iain Hume missed a golden chance to get the Foxes back into the game when he fired wide from the penalty spot and sub Leon Clarke produced a fine lob to secure three points late-on.

Owls fans will of course still be hoping the Baggies can beat the Saints on Monday as that would leave Southampton below them in the table going into the final round of fixtures.

Regardless of what happens in that game the Owls know that if they match Leicester's result next Sunday then they will be playing Championship football again next season. Wednesday face Norwich at Hillsborough, who ensure their own safety with victory over QPR while Leicester face a tough trip to Stoke City who need a point to guarantee promotion to the Premier League.

Blackpool and Coventry will also have a keen eye on Monday night's fixture as if the Saints are beaten then they will be almost assured of safety with a 3-point cushion and a far superior goal difference.
