Wednesday edged out at home

Sheffield Wednesday fell to their second defeat of the league season on Wednesday evening as Brentford took the spoils at Hillsborough.

The Owls were without key midfielder Massimo Luongo while Elias Kachunga dropped out of the starting line up. Alex Hunt and Jack Marriott came into the team in their place.

Brentford took the lead inside 10 minutes when Cameron Dawson was only able to palm a long range strike out into the danger area and Ivan Toney pounced to sweep the rebound past the stranded keeper.

Wednesday responded well in an open first half and made it 1-1 on 25 minutes when Harris dug out a fine cross from the right and Paterson stooped to head home.

Within 5 minutes the Bees regained the lead when Toney headed in at the near post from a corner, showing too much strength for Odubajo.

The Owls had contributed to an open first half but looked vulnerable to Brentfords attacking pace and perhaps with this in mind Monk replaced Hunt with Pelupessy at half-time. The second half was a much tighter affair and the visitors struggled to break Wednesday's more resolute shape but although the Owls were competitive they rarely looked like threatening to get another goal.

The defeat means Wednesday remain on minus 4 points and are 7 adrift of climbing out of the relegation zone. Garry Monk has only led his side to 1 home victory in 2020 and they are without a home win in 9 games.
