Westwood back in the international squad

Mick McCarthy has selected his first provisional Republic of Ireland squad for the start of the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign later this month and it will come as no surprise to Sheffield Wednesday supporters to see Keiren Westwood has been included in his selection.

Westwood was cast aside by former Owls manager Jos Luhukay and could not get into the Wednesday squad at the start of the season let alone be considered for a return to the international set up.

When The Owls parted company with Luhukay in December, caretaker manager Lee Bullen brought Westwood back into the fold and the 34-year-old has taken his opportunity with both hands. The former Manchester City product has played 12 times in the Championship this season since returning to the side and has kept an impressive 8 clean sheets as the Owls have enjoyed an upturn in form.

The Republic of Ireland kick-off their qualifying campaign with an away game against Gibralter on Saturday 23rd March before facing Georgia in Dublin on Tuesday 26th March.
