The Owls chief has been linked with moves for Celtic's Ulrik Laursen who can operate down the left or in the centre of defence although the Dane has had his fair share of injuries.

Wednesday's first choice pair on the left are Paul Heckingbottom and Chris Brunt and the former Plymouth and Southampton manager wants to have as much cover and competition as possible.

Talking to the Sheffield Star, Sturrock said: "We need competition at left back and left-side of midfield. It would be nice to have another one in."

Meanwhile, Wednesday's game at QPR has been moved back a day to Friday 26 August so it can be shown live on Sky.
