Forward steps up progress

Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri is close to giving the Owls a much-needed lift with a return to the fold. The enigmatic Italian of Argentine descent has missed the majority of the season with a knee injury but following surgery he could be back in first team action before the end of the current campaign.

Forestieri returned to full training this month and on Monday he lined up for the Owls under 23’s team at Hillsborough against Coventry City. The 28-year-old played for an hour, earning a 1st-half penalty which he then converted in a 2-1 win.

The former Watford striker stated his eagerness to return to 1st-team action but having been out for so long another outing for the academy may be more likely. Wednesday face Preston at home on Good Friday and then travel to Sunderland on Easter Monday. The Owls have endured a bitterly disappointing season on the back of two previous play-off appearances and still need a couple of positive results to ensure Championship safety. It may be tempting to get such an influential figure involved as soon as possible but providing there are no more setbacks, the home game against Fulham on April 7th may be more realistic.
