Deja Vu as Hornets sting Owls at Hillsborough

Last season Watford came to Hillsborough and cut Wednesday apart on the counter attack, winning 4-1. They repeated the feat today, dominating the first half before eventually running out 3-0 winners.

Wednesday's afternoon got off to a bad start when Sam Hutchinson's return from injury lasted barely 5 minutes before he had to be substituted. Things got worse 21 minutes in when Vydra broke from a seemingly offside position before squaring for Ighalo to tap in from close range.

7 minutes before half time the lead was doubled when Westwood inexplicably allowed Abdi's low shot from the edge of the area to squirm from his grasp. Watford's goals had been somewhat fortunate but there was little doubt that their performance warranted their 2-0 lead at the break.

Stuart Gray brought on Royston Drenthe at half-time, replacing Hallam Hope who had done little to impress in taking the place of the suspended Chris Maguire.

Maghoma and Drenthe looked lively and both brought the best out of Gomes in the Watford goal but the points were wrapped up with 20 minutes to go when Vydra rounded off a good move with a clever chip over Westwood.

Drenthe continued to cause problems as Watford took their foot off the pedal.Wednesday struck a post in a scramble following a corner and the officials made some bemusing decisions to deny the Owls when well positioned late on but they were well beaten and will need to bounce back at Brentford on Tuesday.
