Duo gutted after Crewe debacle - exclusive

Two goals from Gareth Taylor condemned Wednesday to their first defeat in four games and ended the club's recent good run of form which put them five points clear of their nearest relegation rivals - which is now Dario Gradi's Alex.

Fortunately though for Wednesday, Millwall and Brighton both lost but looking at the table and the remaining fixtures, it would be safe to say that Paul Sturrock's men need two wins from their final four games of the season to guarantee survival.

A distraught Simek told Footymad: "Losing 2-0 to Crewe was a shocking result for us. We never really got going and we never really got into the game. We didn't give ourselves a chance and being 2-0 down at half time meant that we had it all to do in the second half.

"We have been in great form recently and had some great results, especially down at Wolves but we came here and expected to get something but we didn't get out of the traps, I don't know what is was but we will focus on the negative aspects and hopefully be ok for the next game.

Carson, who made sure Wednesday were not totally embarrassed by Crewe added: "Yeah the lads are a bit disappointed but we have to look forward to next Saturday and get a good result at home against Norwich.

"I don't know what went wrong, we just didn't get out of the blocks, and the conditions in the first half didn't help with all the wind and the rain against us so we were a bit unlucky but we came out in the second half and played a bit better so we just have to put this performance behind us and look forward to the next few games.

"If results had gone against us then we could have been right back in the dogfight but we are still in the driving seat, got a few points on Millwall and Crewe so a couple of wins should be alright."
