Duo on derby victory - exclusive

A 3-1 win thanks to goals from Lee Peacock and a Steve MacLean brace gave The Owls their first win at Saltergate in over 50 years and left the fans confident that the club can go on another unbeaten run.

Paul Sturrock’s men lost late against Bradford who broke Wednesday’s 10-match streak but the win in Derbyshire was not as easy as some of the supporters were making it out to be.

“I wouldn’t say it was easy,” Lee told Footymad. “I think with the work rate which we put in during the first half and the second half, we just made the game go our way - we worked hard to put the balls in the right areas and it worked for us.

“We showed great character at
Chesterfield, it was a derby game as well but we did show good spirit just to bounce back from the Bradford defeat to win the game. We’re delighted though because we were really down last week as we played really well in the second half but lost in the last minute.”

Meanwhile, the outstanding Lucas is a bit of a perfectionist and he was upset about his mistake which cost Wednesday a clean sheet right at the death.

He said: “From a personal point of view I thought I played well and caught everything but gutted at the end: it wasn’t a foul by their guy but these things happen when you are a goalkeeper and there’s no getting away from it but the main thing is that we got three points from a very difficult-looking game on paper.

Chesterfield is a difficult place to come as they have got a good record there but we weathered the storm so to speak and as soon as we got the first goal I thought we were in a strong position, and we have done that quite a few times away from home this season.”

More from Graeme and David in the week as well as winger Jon-Paul McGovern admitting how he nearly missed the
Chesterfield clash.
