Duo rue missed chances - exclusive

The first meeting of the two sides in a league game for more than 25 years ended in a 0-0 draw although both teams had chances to win the game - Wednesday hit the bar twice in the first half but Southend had the better chances in the second.

Adams, starting his first match of the season, told Footymad: "First half we obviously did really well and created lots of chances, we were unlucky not to be ahead but in the second half it was a different ball game - they had lots of possession but I think Brad Jones only had one real save to make so they had lots of possession without really creating many chances.

"But still it is another point away from home, we are obviously disappointed not to come away with all three points so we will have to look forward to the next game now.

"You can say that Campbell-Ryce had a lot of the ball but I thought that Tommy (Spurr) did really well against him because he didn't let him get many of his crosses in and he made sure that he just ran into dead ends. He got quieter towards the end of the game but you have to praise Tommy for playing well against him."

Bullen meanwhile berates the fact that Wednesday threw so many opportunities away but they have to be happy being the first team to take any points away from Roots Hall this season to keep the club's unbeaten away record.

He said: "We should have had the game put out of sight really in the first half with the chances which we created. In the second half, their manager really had to get them wound up because they were never at the races in the first half and they came at us harder but we did create a few chances.

"Brunty had one or two long drives and we had a good shout for one of the most stonewall penalties I have seen all season but that is the type of thing what's not going for us at the moment. We just have to put our heads down and get on with it and continue to get clean sheets at the back - but we can't be doing with many more clean sheets at the other end.

"Our away form is good so far but the manager says that a draw away from home and a win at home is almost promotion material throughout the season so he is stating what we are lacking at the moment. We have a big game on Tuesday against Stoke and we really have to start making our home games count.

"During the promotion season from league one, our away form carried us through to be honest but we have to start doing it at home this season because we know we can do it: we have a tremendous following away from home but we just have to get the home crowd behind us with some solid performances."
