End of season report, Number 3: Peter Gilbert

Last updated : 11 May 2008 By C. Morris

Gilbert joined the Owls from Leicester during the 2005/06 season. In 2004/05 he made 38 appearances for his previous club, Plymouth but he has never been able to establish himself as a first team regular at Hillsborough and this season has been no different.

The full-back made only 9 starts during 2007/08 and has seen fellow left-back, Tommy Spurr nail down the first-team slot.

His displays against Barnsley and Scunthorpe towards the end of the season were encouraging but once again a niggling injury prevented any sustained run in the team and when he was called upon in the last few games he was forced to play out of position at right-back. He performed well in the home game with Plymouth in this position but in the next fixture at Blackpool he was sent off for losing his head in altercation with Paul Dickov shortly after half-time, limiting the Owls hopes of rescuing anything from what was a crucial game at the time.

Overall season verdict: 6 out of 10. Injury has prevented him from showing any level of consistency, which sums up his Hillsborough career to date. He is unlikely to be anything more of a squad player in the future given the progress of Tommy Spurr.
