Wednesday win development clash

Sheffield Wednesday’s academy team extended their lead at the top of the Under 23 Professional Development League 2 North table as they came from behind to beat Sheffield United at Hillsborough on Tuesday.

As is often the case, the Owls team included a mix of experienced 1st team squad players along with their youngsters and they had a big impact on the result.

The hosts were much the better side in the first half but chances for the likes of Lucas Joao and Marco Matias came and went and the visitors took the lead moments before the break when Tyler Smith found the bottom corner after latching onto a square pass.

The Owls had to wait until 66th minute to find an equaliser, Joao poking home a cross from the impressive Matt Penney. Wednesday won the game with 15 minutes to go as Joao struck a fine volley from inside the penalty area and Joao was unlucky not to add a 3rd late on when his shot was deflected wide.

The likes of Matias, Abdi and Joao will all hope to be in contention for places in the 1st team squad when the Championship action resumes after the international break.
