French football finance problems for Owls new owner

Reuters news website, uk.reuters.com have today reported that French club RC Lens have had their promotion to Ligue 1 in France suspended due to financial issues.

The problem stems from the authorities expressing that there are 'insufficient financial guarantees' in place at the club, apparently relating to a figure of around 10M Euro.

RC Lens club president Gervais Martel has played down the incident, stating that the delay in the transfer of funds was due to a recent public holiday in Azerbaijan which preventing Hafiz Mammadov from transferring the funds at the time.

An appeal on the matter is likely to be heard either next week or the following week with Martel confident that Lens will take their place in the top flight next season.

Mr. Mammadov was confirmed as the buyer of Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month. The Owls were hoping that the ratification process with the F.A of that takeover deal would have made significant progress by now but there has been little news of any developments on this over the past week. It may be that the public holiday and this issue with the French club has taken precedence at this time. However, it doesn't help that Wednesday have not released any updates since the takeover was announced and now this news will be relayed to Owls fans from second hand sources, creating negative feelings.
