Hard-earned point moves Owls closer to top 6

Sheffield Wednesday twice came from behind to earn a point against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Carlos Carvalhal chose to stick with Atdhe Nuhiu up front but made a couple of changes to last weeks starting line up with Liam Palmer and Modou Sougou coming in for Jack Hunt and Ross Wallace.

The home crowd were in good voice for Paul Lamberts first home game at the Blackburn helm and they had plenty to cheer just 5 minutes in when Rovers took the lead. Craig Conway delivered a corner into the Owls box and Hope Akpan rose highest to power a header into the goal.

For a large period of the first half both sides struggled to create much in front of goal and it was something of a surprise when Wednesday found an equalizer out of nowhere. Kieran Lee ghosted into the box and beat Steele in the Blackburn goal with a low angled shot that came back out off the post but luckily for the Owls Sougou was on hand to tap home the rebound 5 minutes before half-time.

Just as it looked as though the sides would go into the break all square Blackburn regained the lead in the last minute of the half. Another Conway corner was cleared to the edge of the box from where Evans hit a speculative shot the the Owls appeared to have covered but the ball to a key deflection that saw it evade the defenders and find its way into the back of the net.

Clearly not happy with his sides first-half display Carvalhal replaced Helan and Nuhiu with Joao and Hooper at half-time and the visitors produced a much more attacking second 45 minutes.

Wallace later replaced Sougou as Wednesday pushed for a goal and Forestieri and Hooper had efforts that went wide.

Just as it looked as though the Owls would be frustrated they made it 2-2 with 6 minutes to go. Once again Kieran Lee was involved, the midfielder appeared to miss-hit a shot as he slipped and the ball found its way to Joao who nodded home from close range.

Highly-rated Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes had a chance to win the game late on but saw his header easily saved by Westwood and the point moved the Owls level on points with 6th placed Birmingham.

The Owls travel to Stoke City for the League Cup Quarter Final clash on Tuesday before facing high-flying Derby County in the Championship at Hillsborough next Sunday.
