High flying Owls brought back down to earth

Sheffield Wednesday lost for the first time in their warm ups for the 2008/09 season, going down 1-0 against Chesterfield at Saltergate.

The league two side took the lead just after midway through the first-half thanks to a glancing header from Jamie Ward, who met a cross from Lowry to beat Lee Grant.

Both sides had numerous chances throughout the game and Wednesday should have equalised before half-time when McAllister hit the woodwork. The central midfielder was later to be replaced towards the end of the game after taking a knock but it is not thought to be too serious.

While it is always disappointing to lose it may not be such a bad thing at this stage as it will put a halt to the possibility of complacency following the fine pre-season form to date.

More worrying is the fact that neither new midfield acquisition Jimmy Smith nor striker Francis Jeffers featured in this evening's game, leaving them with only one real first team game to prove their fitness before the start of the season. USA international Frank Simek is also yet to step up his rehabilitation in terms of competitive football and it would appear he is some way of a return just yet.

The Owls are likely to field a mainly youthful side against Sheffield FC tomorrow and complete their warm up games against Premier League Wigan on Saturday.
