Late leveller sees Owls drop to 7th

Sam Winnall looked to have given Sheffield Wednesday 3 vital points with a goal against former club Barnsley but an injury time goal from McDonald earned the home side a 1-1 draw.

In a game of few shots on target one of the main talking points of the first half was another injury to Sam Hutchinson that forced the influential Owls midfield linchpin out of the game. The former Chelsea player has been one of Wednesday's best performers this season and the Owls can ill-afford to have to do without him during the run-in.

Wednesday took the lead early on in the second half when Winnall, jeered throughout by the home fans who adored him not so long ago, stroked home in front of the away fans. Home keeper Davies looked to see an over-hit ball out for a goal-kick but was caught on the byline and the ball was cut back for Winnall to pass into the unguarded goal.

Having celebrated gleefully in front of the home fans Winnall looked to have a brace notched a few minutes later but this time his celebrations were short-lived as his second strike was ruled out for offside.

Barnsley rallied late on and made it 1-1 when Mcdonald headed in Hammill's free-kick from close range. Hammill was then denied by a goal-line clearance from Fox as the home side looked to pinch all 3 points but in the end a draw was probably a fair result.

Later that afternoon Fulham won 1-0 at Rotherham to move up to 6th place in the Championship table, a point ahead of the Owls. That result relegated the Millers and Wednesday must be looking for 3 points at the New York Stadium in Tuesday evening if they are to keep their faltering promotion hopes alive, though Fulham do have a tricky midweek game at Derby who themselves will have outside hopes of a top 6 push.
