Sheffield Wednesday has moved to add to their attacking options by securing the services of Derby County striker Luke Varney on loan for the rest of the 2009/10 season.

This will be Varney’s 3rd spell at Hillsborough having scored 2 goals in four appearances towards the end of last season and adding 4 more goals in a spell that saw him feature 19 times this season.

Wednesday manager Alan Irvine spoke of his admiration of the player and highlighted his work rate as a key attribute. The Owls currently have injury concerns over two attacking players in Jermaine Johnson and Francis Jeffers and so Varney is expected to go straight into the squad for the home clash with Peterborough United on Saturday. The striker will not be eligible to face his parent club when Derby visit Hillsborough on March 20th.

Alan Irvine has previously indicated that he may have to let somebody go out of the door if he was to bring anyone in and so with more than a week remaining of the January transfer window time will tell if there are to be any departure from Hillsborough.
