No new deal for Reda

Reda Johnson has today followed his namesake Jermaine out of the Hillsborough exit door after not being offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday.

The big Benin defender sees his contract come to an end this summer and he will not be offered a new one, much to the disappointment of many Owls fans.

Reda has become something of a cult hero during his time with the Owls. When Gary Megson took over as manager with the club struggling in League One he once referred to the defending of Johnson as being akin to a bomb scare.

At that time Reda was playing at centre-back having just joined the club from Plymouth in January 2011.

The following season saw Megson deploy Johnson in the left-back position and he flourished in that role. He made 30 appearances as the Owls secured automatic promotion and his no-nonsense style made him a popular figure.

His ever-growing popularity was given a further boost as the Owls kicked off their return to the Championship with a 2-2 draw at derby County, coming from 2-0 down with Reda scoring a last minute equaliser following a typical bustling second half display.

His time at the club has unfortunately been beset by injury problems which have been more prevalent in the past season and seemingly innocuous injuries have kept him sidelined for weeks and months. Despite being first choice in his position when fit Johnson has played in less than half Wednesday's league games in 2013/14 which gives some justification to the albeit disappointing decision not to retain his services.

Aside from his 100% displays whenever he has worn the Wednesday shirt his commitments to good causes off the field have gone above and beyond that of his fellow professionals. Reda became the clubs community champion for his work within the community this season and his efforts were also recognised at national level when he won the Football League Player in the Community award earlier this year following his contribution in donating £5,000 to one charity appeal and raising the profile of that particular causer to help raise additional funds.

There is no denying that Reda will be a big miss both on and off the field at Hillsborough and Wednesday fans everywhere will be wishing the big man with a big heart all the best for the future.
