Nothing to be Modest about as far as injury crisis is concerned

Nathan Modest took advantage of the Owls injury crisis to make his league debut on Saturday but it seems no one is safe from the curse at the moment.

After experiencing the emotional high of playing his first 45 minutes of Championship football Modest has been rocked by a knee injury sustained in training and is now a doubt for the Boxing Day clash at home to Blackpool.

Such are the Owls injury problems that Brian Laws had little option but to start with Modest out of position on the right side of midfield at Cardiff on Saturday and other than a goalkeeper the Owls have a full team currently out of action:

Jermaine Johnson has in the past played at right-back when called upon and left-back Peter Gilbert is also out of action. Frank Simek and Steve Watson are both capable of playing at centre-half and long-term injury victim Richard Hinds has played plenty of games in defensive midfield during his career.

Out-of-action wingers Wade Small and Etienne Esajas could be joined by attacking midfielder Jimmy Smith who is currently struggling with illness and the Owls then have a choice of unavailable strikers to make up their injured team.

Talisman Akpo Sodje has missed most of the season so far and has recently been joined on the sidelines by the in form Leon Clarke, Francis Jeffers and now Nathan Modest as well.

Although many of these players would not be first choice to start in these positions at least 4 or 5 of them would be in contention for a place in the starting 11 in their preferred positions and the majority of the remaining players would expect to make the 1st team squad on a regular basis.

Let's hope that Christmas brings some cheer for our ailing players and we are at least able to name a full squad on Boxing Day!
