Opportunities knock as defender and striker are set to miss out

Sheffield Wednesday will be without two key players who were key to the weekend win over Norwich when they face Derby at Hillsborough this coming Saturday.

Defender Tommy Spurr will serve a suspension after two late bookings saw him sent off at Carrow Road and on-loan striker Luke Varney is not eligible to face his parent club.

This means that the door will be open for players to impress in training during the week in order to stake a claim to fill in for them. In the case of Spurr it will almost certainly be a chance to fill in for one game only. The left-back has been one the Owls best and most consistent performers throughout the season and would expect to reclaim his place once the suspension is served.

Frank Simek could come in on the right with Lewis Buxton able to revert to the left. The American, once regarded as a shoe-in at right-back has struggled to regain his form and thus his place in the team following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Another option would be to bring youngster Mark Beevers back into the team at centre-back and play Hinds and Buxton at full-back, however, Hinds has done well at centre-half in recent matches and so this may be too much of a reshuffle for a defence that has kept two clean sheets in succession.

Varney may be replaced up front in a more structured 4-4-2 by Marcus Tudgay, who once again showed his versatility in playing from a wide role at Norwich. That could mean a wide midfield start for Etienne Esajas, who is short of match fitness but could play for the reserves this week to boost this. Another alternative is to bring James O'Connor in and play Sean McAllister in wide midfield.

There are also options such as bringing back Akpo Sodje or Leon Clarke to start in attack but both are seriously short of match fitness.
