Owls boss on fine form

BBC radio Sheffield hosted a live edition of their football heaven show at Sheffield Hallam University this evening, featuring the bosses of six local league clubs.

When questioned by the audience, the majority of whom were Wednesday fans, on which player from a rival local club they would like to have in their squad, Blades boss Kevin Blackwell stalled saying he was trying hard to think of a really good Wednesday player but Laws retorted stating that his rivals came up against 11 good players when the sides met last season-on both occasions.

On more serious matters the Owls boss stated, as most fans know, that he is currently restricted by economics and would only envisage bringing anyone else in before the end of the transfer window if he could free up some funds from elsewhere.

Commenting on the size of the squad Laws pointed out that although only two new faces have come in this summer with many more leaving, the squad will be bolstered by the return of many players from injury. The likes of Francis Jeffers, Steve Watson, Frank Simek, Akpo Sodje and Etienne Esajas all missed large chunks of last season so the return of these players is a huge boost going into the new campaign.

On the subject of the takeover the Owls manager reasoned that the directors of the club and shareholders including Wednesdayite all want what is best for the club, to secure a deal that will take the club forward.

From what I saw as a member of the audience Laws appeared to be in a jovial, relaxed and confident mood and is looking forward kicking off the new campaign and erasing the memories of last season's horrific start in the process.

While conceding that the city rivals could be amongst the top teams in the division this season he will be looking for the Owls to at least stay in touch with them. For his part Kevin Blackwell stated that both clubs have huge potential worthy of top flight status.

Wednesday are hoping to put Jeffers, Watson and Jimmy Smith through their paces in a closed-door friendly game on Tuesday as they bid to prove themselves fit for contention for a place in the team for the season opener against Burnley at Hillsborough on Saturday.
