Owls enjoy entertaining Portuguese giants

Sheffield Wednesday stepped up the preparations for the new season with a productive work out against Portuguese champions Benfica at Hillsborough.

The visitors, captained by Brazilian centre-back Luisao, came to Sheffield fresh from beating Wednesday's Championship rivals Derby County 4-0 in the Algarve at the weekend but the Owls offered a much sterner test on a muggy evening in S6.

Having spurned a couple of presentable early opportunities Wednesday scored a fine goal midway through the first half when Marco Matias picked out Forestieri with a pinpoint pass and the forward set up an opportunity for himself with a deft right-foot touch before firing a low drive across the keeper with his left.

The Owls passed the ball well with Bannan, Lee, Matias and Forestieri looking particularly impressive.

Benfica came into the game more in the last half an hour as they looked for an equaliser for their enthusiastic band of followers in the West Stand to cheer but in truth Jake Kean, making his debut in the Wednesday goal having been brought in as a late replacement when Wildsmith picked up an injury in the warm-up, was rarely extended.

The 1-0 win, albeit a friendly is one that the Owls can be pleased with but the productive workout against opposition of real quality will have been exactly what Carlos Carvalhal was hoping for.

Wednesday now travel for a warm weather training camp in Portugal where they will face CD Nacional this weekend.
