Owls facing striker shortage ahead of derby?

Sheffield Wednesday face promotion contenders Birmingham at Hillsborough on Saturday and go to Bramall Lane a week later with plenty to be concerned about as far as strikers are concerned.

Front-man Francis Jeffers had showed signs of a return to form in the recent home win against Charlton but he is now set to miss three games through suspension. His dismissal for violent conduct following a poorly judged lunge on Joe Heath is likely to see him sidelined for three matches.

Leon Clarke came on as a second-half substitute at the city ground but he looked way short of match fitness during his 20 minute run out, having not played since before Christmas. Akpo Sodje could also be in line for a place in the squad soon but he has only started two games this season and has been out of action since November so rushing him back for what is sure to be a physical encounter may not be wise.

Youngsters Nathan Modest and Luke Boden have been in the squad recently but they have a distinct of first team experience and their inclusion in the first team at the early stage of their careers has been largely due to injury problems throughout the squad.

That leaves Marcus Tudgay as the only recognised fully fit experienced striker in the squad and he ran himself into the ground following the sending-off of Jeffers at Forest.

Jermaine Johnson played well in support of Tudgay in Tuesday's defeat but he has been wasteful in front of goal when used as a striker previously this season.

It is unclear whether the Owls have any money available to bring in a loan signing in the next few days but given the situation that they now find themselves in this could be something that they will need to consider in the next few days.
