Owls fall short in Wembley final

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on claiming the final Premier League sport for the 2016/17 season as Hull City won the Championship play-off final 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday.

The Owls had first-half free-kicks from Forestieri and Wallace saved by Jakupovic in the Hull goal while at the other end Diame hit the outside of the post but clear cut chances were few and far between.

Wednesday enjoyed more possession at the start of the second half but struggled to get behind Hull's organised back line and with 20 minutes to go Diame beat Westwood with a fine strike into the top corner from 25 yards for what proved to be the winning goal.

Hull had the better of the chances and deserved the victory. Wednesday were understandably disappointed at the end of the game but having enjoyed such a good season the fans stayed on to lift the distraught players with 40,000 Wednesdayites showing their appreciation to Carvalhal and his team.
