Fulham will be glad to see the back of Sheffield Wednesday this season. The Owls overcame the Londoners 2-1 in the 3rd round of the F.A. Cup on Saturday, beating them for a second weekend in a row and a third time this season.

With 2 important league games coming up this week Carlos Carvalhal chose a mix of first team regulars and squad players for the Hillsborough tie with the likes of Westwood, Hunt, Hutchinson, Lees and Forestieri not being involved.

Both sides clearly wanted to win the tie on the day and avoid a replay, making for plenty of chances at both ends. Despite this it took a goal of top quality to open the scoring, Barry Bannan, firing home a beauty from outside the area with half-time approaching.

The home side failed to see the half out however and within a minute or so the visitors were level when Dembele found the net from close range.

Dembele had a great chance to put Fulham into the lead straight after the restart but the ever-impressive young goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith came to the Owls rescue with a point-blank save.

Atdhe Nuhiu won the game for Wednesday with 15 minutes remaining, slotting past Andy Lonergan after good work from Joao and the Owls can now look forward to the 4th round draw on Monday evening.

Wednesday do know that they won't be facing local opposition after all of South Yorkshire's other sides left in the competition fell by the wayside in the 3rd round, fellow championship side Rotherham losing at Leeds and League One sides Doncaster and Sheffield United beaten by Premier League sides Stoke and Manchester United respectively.

The Owls return to Championship action with 2 home games in the next week – Bolton on Tuesday evening and Leeds United next Saturday.
