Owls get lost in the trees with victory in sight

Sheffield Wednesday picked up a point at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening but for much of the match it seemed they were destined to get a welcome win.

The Owls took an early lead when Chris Maguire scored from the spot but it looked as though they would go into the half-time break somewhat deflated when Jamie Mackie equalised with a minute to go. There was however still enough time before the interval for Lewis Buxton to restore the visitors lead and they increased their lead in the second half when Joe Mattock fired home shortly before the hour mark.

At that stage the Owls looked comfortable and Leon Best went close to adding a fourth but the result was put in doubt with just over 10 minutes remaining when Wednesday old boy Marcus Tudgay headed past Kirkland.

The home side then seemingly ended their chances of salvaging a point when their captain Danny Collins was sent off for a second bookable offence but the Owls failed to make the most of the one man advantage and with three minutes left Jamie Paterson fired in a free-kick to make it 3-3.

So, both sides ended with a share of the spoils from a hugely entertaining encounter. Wednesday would probably have accepted a point from the game at kick-off have been forced to start without the injured first choice central defensive paring of Onyewu and Loovens. However, from 3-1 up with less than 15 minutes to go the result may well feel more like a defeat than a point gained.
