Sheffield Wednesday have succeeded in appealing against the red card received by Marco Matias during the defeat to Birmingham at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Portuguese player received a straight red from referee Scott Duncan who appeared to take advice from his linesman before making the decision. Matias was involved in a coming together with Birmingham defender Cohen Bramall but nothing of any significance seemed to happen and there was a look of bemusement from all around when the red-card was brandished.

The F.A. agreed with the appeal raised by the Owls and as a result Matias will be available for selection at the weekend when they face South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Oakwell. Wednesday were 2-0 down at the time of the dismissal but still had hope of getting back in the game with almost an hour still to play. The sending off effectively ended that hope and having got back to 3-1 the Owls were reduced to 9 men in the second half when Pudil was shown a second yellow card as the home side got stretched and tired – a red card that might not have occurred had they not been chasing the game with 10 men at the time.
