Sheffield Wednesday have secured the services of goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on a one-year deal. As was reported at the weekend, Weaver spent the back end of last week training with the Owls squad and has also been with them at Middlewood Road this week.

The Owls official website, www.swfc.co.uk has now confirmed that the former Manchester City custodian has joined the club on a one year contract and is in contention to play against Dagenham and Redbridge at the weekend.

The 31-year-old Sheffield native previously played for the club on loan in the 2005/06 season and spent a spell in Scotland with Dundee United last season.

Having made over 300 first team appearances in his experience should aid the continued development of the Owls two young goalkeepers, Richard O’Donnell and Arron Jameson.

The move signals the lifting of the transfer embargo placed on the club in relation to the outstanding debt to HMRC though interestingly the club state that they have reached an agreement on a payment schedule which suggests that the balance has not yet been settled in full.
