Owls have no option but to play frustrating waiting game

Sheffield Wednesday fans are enduring a close-season of inactivity thus far as the Owls have yet to make a specific move in the transfer market at the end of the season. This becomes all the more frustrating when other clubs are making moves to add to their squads at this stage.

Having released 8 first-team players and seen the contracts of a few significant players come to an end, Stuart Gray's squad is very short on numbers at this time.

Perhaps most concerning is the fact the 2 key out of contract players who are said to have been offered new deals are yet to make any form of commitment. Keeper Chris Kirkland has been one of Wednesday's best performers since moving to Hillsborough two seasons ago and Jose Semedo has been a rock in the centre of the park for the Owls.

Both players were said to have stated a desire to extend their S6 stays towards the end of last season but neither player has put this talk into a firm deal on paper to date.

Centre-back pairing Oguchi Onyewu and Glenn Loovens, who joined last season on short term deals are also thought to have been in talks with the club about new contracts but as was expected with the pair, they appear to weighing up their options.

Some may argue that with over 2 months to go until the start of the season and 3 months until the transfer window closes, there is still plenty of time for the team to take shape and it is too early to be downhearted about the lack of activity.

However, when the club started to sell season tickets early a few seasons ago a major reason for doing so was stated to be so that the club could have a large bulk of their budget in place in order to make early moves in the summer transfer market.

The earlier that the squad is finalised the easier it is for the coaching staff to get their ideas and instructions across in pre-season and it is better for the players to adjust to any new surroundings prior to the start of the season.
