Wednesday give fair account in preparation for new season
Sheffield Wednesday earned a decent draw against Premier League Leicester City on Saturday at Loughborough University as they stepped up their preparations for the new season. The Owls are just a week away from starting the 2020-21 season with a League Cup 1st round game away at Walsall.
Leicester had much of the ball in the first half but both sides spurned good opportunities to score. Luongo did well to clear when Justin was well placed on the edge of the Owls 6 yards box and Dawson saved well with his legs to deny Jamie Vardy. At the other end Iorfa missed a sitter, putting a close range header over the bar from a free-kick and Reach failed to connect with a fine ball in from Bannan.
Both sides made plenty of changes at the break and the second half was a scrappy affair but again chances came and went. Iheanacho beat two Wednesday players with ease but was wasteful with his finish when he had team mates well placed and Gray dragged a good chance wide after good work from Barnes. Wednesday lacked cohesion in the second half but did have the best chance of the game when Shaw played in Hagan but the young forward placed his finish wide of the goal. At the other end Gray was then denied by an excellent saves from Wildsmith which proved to be the last action of note.
Garry Monk will be pleased with the way his squad applied themselves but it is clear to see that the Owls are short of fire power and need to address this soon.
