Wednesday fail to take advantage of positive start
Sheffield Wednesday had to make do with a point on Saturday following a frustrating 1-1 draw against struggling Shrewsbury Town at Hillsborough.
Darren Moore handed Saido Berahino a first start and Denis Adeniran returned in midfield. The Owls started on the front foot and took the lead after just six minutes when a deep Bannan corner was met by the head of Berahino to mark his home debut in style. Wednesday continued on the front foot and Berahino headed another good chance just wide. Midway through the half the home side were presented with a great chance to double their lead when Bannan found Shodipo with a through ball and the winger was hauled down inside the penalty area as he was about to shoot. Bannan stepped up to take the spot kick but dragged his shot low and wide of the keepers left hand post.
Still the chances came and went for Wednesday, Gregory firing tamely at the Town keeper having linked up with Berahino. There was little of any sign of Shrewsbury causing a threat so when they found an equaliser on eight minutes before half-time it was completely out of the blue. Peacock-Farrell failed to grasp a low cross-shot at his near post and Bowman was on hand to bundle the ball in for the visitors from virtually on the goal line. There was still time for Bannan to pass up another chance, shooting just wide from the edge of the area with Marosi in the Shrewsbury goal seemingly well beaten.
Wednesday began the second half with good intent, Shodipo cutting inside and firing just over the bar from twenty yards but unlike in the first half, they failed to maintain any pressure and became increasingly frustrated. As the home sides play became more disjointed the visitors almost stole the lead, Leahy getting in behind the Owls back line but firing a powerful shot just wide.
With twenty-five minutes to go the Owls looked to have regained the lead when Bannan slid in Shodipo for the winger to score, only for the linesman to raise a flag with what appeared to be an incorrect offside decision.
A final push for three points never really materialised in the closing stages with the best chance coming in injury time when Gregory looped a header narrowly wide.
The Owls have now taken just one point from their last three matches and face two tricky away matches up next, at Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic.
