Sheffield Wednesday began their pre-season schedule at the Impact Arena where they eased past Alfreton Town to record a comfortable victory.

The Owls fielded 23 players during the fixture, including a first-half run out for new signing George Boyd. The visitors were 2-0 up inside half-an-hour thanks to a brace from Jordan Rhodes, though the Scotland striker was withdrawn before half-time having suffered a cut to his head.

Atdhe Nuhiu made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, tapping home a sweeping move involving Bannan and Fox then Adam Reach, who had already hit the bar from range, made it 4 with another fine strike from distance.

Youngster Connor O’Grady made it 5-0 to complete the scoring with a couple of minutes to go, scrambling home as the hosts failed to clear a corner.

Wednesday make another short trip to Mansfield at the weekend before they travel to Portugal.
