Owls match is off

Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool this afternoon has been postponed due to a frozen pitch at Bloomfield Road.

The Lancashire club announced yesterday that a pitch inspection was to take place this morning at 10.30am due to a forecast of freezing conditions overnight.

The time of the inspection gave the travelling Wednesday supporters the option of waiting for the result of the test before starting their journey and as was feared the wintery conditions have got the better of the playing surface.

The news will come as something as a blow to the Owls as despite not picking up a win in 11 games they did finally find some encouraging form in the 2-2 Boxing Day draw against Coca-Cola Championship leaders Newcastle and would have been hoping to build on this.

With the F.A. Cup fixture against Crystal Palace coming up on Saturday the Owls do not return to league action until they face Peterborough at Hillsborough on the 9th January unless the Blackpool game is rearranged before that in the meantime and by then they could find themselves bottom of the table if today’s results go against them.
