Owls must improve upon results if they are to challenge this season

With 15 games of the 2016-17 Championship season having been played Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in a very similar position to where they were at the same stage last season.

After 15 games last time around the Owls had won 6, drawn 6 and lost 3, giving them 24 points and a place inside the top 10.

Saturday's usual disappointing result against Derby saw the Owls drop to 8th place in the table with 7 wins, 5 defeats and 3 draws – resulting in a total of 24 points.

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has commented numerous times recently that the quality of the squad and the football they are playing at the moment is much improved compared with the same stage last term. Whilst many would agree that this is the case, the Owls do not currently have the points to back that up and they need to start turning their performances into points.

Last seasons defeated play-off finalists have been widely reported to have been the better side in games against Birmingham, Brentford, Cardiff and on Saturday at Derby they spurned a host of chances but from these 4 games they only picked up 2 points.

Even in the games they have won, good chances have been wasted and the Owls goal difference makes poor reading in comparison with the majority of the sides currently pushing for a top 6 place.

Wednesday face struggling Ipswich Town at Hillsborough on Saturday ahead of the next international break, a home win would leave them in a healthy position at this stage but anything less would put the pressure on with 3 tricky away games to follow in the next 4 fixtures.
