Owls out to build on draw as Madine faces old club

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Carlisle in League One on Saturday looking to build on the encouraging point that they picked up in the 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.

It will be an emotional day for Owls striker Gary Madine as he returns to the club where he developed his career for the first time since moving to Hillsborough just last month.

Wednesday will continue to be without the services of midfielder Giles Coke as he serves the last game of his 3-match ban. Youngster Liam Palmer made a positive impression in the middle of the park last time out and his likely to retain his place, as is Tommy Miller who returned from injury to captain the side at Bournemouth.

A first clean sheet in the league in twelve games is likely to see Gary Megson stick with the same back four of Reda Johnson, Beevers, Spurr and Hinds. Megson chose to go with a 4-5-1 formation against the second placed Cherries and he could well stick with this as the Owls still managed to create some good opportunities to win the game. Should he choose to revert to two players up front against the mid-table Cumbrians then Clinton Morrison, Neil Mellor and Paul Heffernan are all available for selection.

Carlisle will be without former Wednesday midfielder Graham Kavanagh. The experienced Irishman has only made 1 substitute appearance this season and has a knee injury that is likely to keep him out for most of the remainder of the campaign.

Former Sheffield United midfielder Paul Thirlwell has a torn calf muscle that will keep him out of the fixture.

Ex-Owls favourite Frank Simek has been an ever-present in the league for Carlisle this season and will line up against his former club again this weekend.

Carlisle have collected 7 points from their last three games but have an indifferent record at home this season with six wins, six draws and four defeats to date.

No other team in League One has lost more away games than the 10 that the Owls have suffered on their travels so far. They have not won a league match on the road since beating MK Dons 4-1 in mid-November.

The two sides have clashed twice already this season with Wednesday losing out on both occasions. Carlisle won 1-0 in the league at Hillsborough and followed that up by winning 3-1 at Brunton Park in the Football League Trophy.
