Owls out to ensure table isn't turned on its head

Sheffield Wednesday travel south to Brentford for a lunchtime kick-off on Sunday sitting pretty at the top of League One whilst their hosts are bottom of the early season table.

Wednesday come into the game on the back of two successive victories, winning 5-0 at Hartlepool last weekend and following that up with a 2-1 against Notts County win in the football league trophy in midweek.

The Owls are still without injury victim Jermaine Johnson but their only other worry is over the fitness of Chris Sedgwick who limped out of the Notts County game. Despite this the wide midfielder is expecting to recover in time to play.

Having made four changes for the Wednesday evening cup tie Irvine may well revert back to the starting eleven that served him so well the previous weekend, that would mean the unfortunate James O’Connor, who bagged a brace against County, would return to the bench.

Brentford manager Andy Scott has a choice to make in goal as the Bees have recently signed Ben Hamer on loan from Reading and he could replace Richard Lee. Last season’s top scorer Charlie Macdonald is expected to return after missing the midweek cup win against Stevenage. Fellow striker Gary Alexander could be back in contention having previously suffered from a hand injury but Kirk Hudson could miss out with a back problem.

The Bees have picked up just one point from their first four league games this season and have lost both home league fixtures but recently beat Hull City in the League Cup at Griffin Park.

Wednesday’s last trip to Brentford resulted in a 2-1 win in the semi-final 2nd leg of the Owls triumphant League One play-off campaign in 2005. The two sides have met 13 times in London with each side winning 4 times.
