EFL case against individuals dropped

Sheffield Wednesday released a statement on Friday evening to signify that EFL charges against individuals involved in the contested sale of Hillsborough stadium have been dropped.

The EFL brought charges of misconduct against the club, Dejphon Chansiri, Katrien Meire and John Redgate in November 2019 in relation to the date of sale of the stadium, which was included in the 2018-18 accounts of the club.

Wednesday filed papers  to arbitration in respect of the charges and Friday's information release stated that the individuals involved consider this decision to be a vindication of the defence raised against the charges.

This means that no direct action will be taken against the individuals in respect of the matter and so Mr. Chansiri can not be prevented from running the club. The charges against the club remain and will proceed to a hearing which the club will continue to vigorously defend. The prospect of sanctions including a points deduction therefore remain but the fact that the charges that the EL saw fit to bring against individuals of the club have been dropped is a positive sign.
