Owls pay the price for lack of urgency

Sheffield Wednesday suffered their second defeat inside a week as Leeds United came away from Hillsborough with a 2-0 win.

Marcus Antonsson headed the visitors into the lead just after the hour mark, fellow striker Chris Wood picking him out with a chipped cross as the visitors caught Wednesday out on the break and the Whites finished the Owls off with 5 minutes remaining when Wood flicked in a low cross from the Wednesday right from close range. By that stage the home side were chasing the game and had gone to 3 at the back but it was really a lack of tempo and intent earlier in the game that cost the Owls.

Wednesday bossed possession and Forestieri missed 2 good opportunities early on before Abdi struck a fine free-kick off the top of the bar 5 minutes before half-time.

Abdi went off at the break with a shoulder injury, replaced by Hooper and although the continued to enjoy the lions share of possession they rarely threatened the Leeds goal and did little to increase the tempo and urgency of their attacks.

Despite having less of the ball Leeds were not being forced back and their game plan appeared to be to hit the Owls off guard. Wednesday seemed to be expecting the chances to come eventually rather than force the issue and they paid the price for not being more assertive.

The defeat will leave Wednesday well adrift of the early pace setters once the afternoon matches are completed and they face a tough trip to Brentford next weekend before the international break.
