Owls saunter past Stags

Sheffield Wednesday booked their place in the 2nd round of the League Cup on Tuesday evening thanks to a convincing 4-1 win against Mansfield at Hillsborough.

Carlos Carvalhal made 9 changes to the side that beat Bristol City in the Championship opener on Saturday but there was no adverse affect as the fringe players seemed eager to impress and stake their claims.

Wednesday were in front inside 15 minutes when Lucas Joao headed home a pinpoint Lopez set-piece and it was 2-0 inside 20 minutes when Semedo converted a Sougou cross for a rare goal from the defensive midfielder.

Wednesday were looking comfortable but offered Mansfield a route back into the match on half-time. Wildsmith made a fine save to deny Beardsley but from the resulting corner some sloppy defending allowed Tafazolli to score.

The Owls wasted no time in putting that error behind them in the 2nd half as with just 7 minutes played Lee made it 3-1 after more impressive build up play from Joao. Both sides spurned a couple of good chances during the 2nd half before Helan picked out Sougou for the 4th with a little over 5 minutes to go.

The Owls now await the 2nd round draw to be made later this week which will feature a host of Premier League teams.
