Owls show strength in depth as Premier League hosts are beaten

Sheffield Wednesday upset the odds on Wednesday evening, knocking Premier League side Newcastle United out of the Capital One Cup at St James Park

The Owls are clearly focussed on making a positive impression in the Championship this season and made no less than 10 changes to the team that started their league victory at home to Fulham on Saturday.

Their hosts by comparison made only 5 changes to the side that lost to Watford in the Premier League with experienced players such as Krul, Williamson, Anita, Janmaat, Wijnaldum, Sissoko and Obertan featuring.

Wednesday’s strength in depth was clear as they frustrated their more illustrious home side in the first half, Sissoko with the only effort of note for the Magpies as his shot hit the outside of the post.

The St James Park crowd booed their team off at half-time and their displeasure continued in the 2nd 45 as Wednesday grew in confidence. Sougou should have put the Owls in front just after the hour but his first effort was kept out by Krul and he fired the rebound wide.

Substitute Perez fired a rare home chance into the side netting but the near 5,000 away fans had plenty to cheer with 15 minutes to go when McGugan’s low drive from the edge of the box beat Krul to put the Owls in front.

Moments later the result should have been put beyond doubt. Joao’s fine header at the back post came out off the underside of the crossbar and the rebound fell to Bus who somehow managed to hit the top of the bar with the goal at his mercy.

De Jong went close to rescuing the Toon in injury time but the away win sees the Owls deservedly progress into the 4th round of the League Cup for the first time in 14 seasons.
