Owls survive cup upset - for now at least

Sheffield Wednesday lived to fight another day in the F.A. Cup on a day of shocks in the 3rd Round of the competition.

Wednesday led 1-0 at non-league Macclesfield at half-time but were pegged back by their hosts with 20 minutes to go. The home side were encouraged by their equaliser and were the better side in the second half but they didn't really create a clear cut opportunity to win the game after they had drawn level despite the Owls having a few nervy moments at the back.

Macclesfield enjoyed a 2-1 victory against Cardiff at the same stage last season and so a draw is not the worst result in the world for Wednesday. The Owls will get the chance to book a place in round 4 in the replay at Hillsborough and for Macclesfield the second game will bring in some much needed income for the cash-strapped club.

With the 4th round draw to be made on Sunday both sides will be aware of what awaits the winners in the next round and could provide an added incentive if an appealing tie is in store.

Elsewhere in the competition Wednesday's city neighbours Sheffield United enjoyed a memorable 2-1 win at Premier League side Aston Villa, Leeds United lost at League Two team Rochdale, Southend hammered Championship strugglers Millwall and Premier League giants Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.
