Sheffield Wednesday have swooped to sign experienced goalkeeper Keiren Westwood on a two-year contract.

The Republic of Ireland international saw his contract with Premier league side Sunderland come to an end this summer making him a free agent. Westwood made 19 appearances for the North East side having moved there from Coventry City in the summer of 2011.

Westwood began his professional career as a youngster at Manchester Cuty before making his mark as a first choice keeper at Carlisle in 2006. His success there earned him a move to Coventry and his progression continued, earning national recognition by being voted into the PFA Championship player of the year team in 2008/09 and picking up the Sky Blues' player of the year award the following season.

At the age of 29 Westwood should still have some of his best years as a keeper ahead of him and there will be healthy competition for a first team place at S6 with experienced stopper Chris Kirkland.
