Pre-season will be closer to home

Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has stated the squad will be basing their pre-season schedule entirely in the UK this summer as they look to hit the ground running in the 2018-19 Championship season.

The players have around 6 weeks off before they report back for their preparations for the new season during the last week in June. In recent years the Owls have headed for a few days in Portugal but Luhukay stated that a couple of days important training could be lost to needless travelling and so the Owls will be cutting that out this time around.

Wednesday got off to a slow start this season and were not quick out of the blocks in either of former coach Carlos Carvalhal’s previous two seasons either. During the past season there was criticism of the level of the squad’s core fitness from inside and outside of the club and it is reported that Carvalhal has never been much of a fan of working without the ball in training. Luhukay has intimated that there may be more of a focus on the physical side of preparations this time around having acknowledged the intense and unforgiving nature of competition in the Championship.
