Points the priority for struggling pair ahead of South Yorkshire derby

Sheffield Wednesday make the short trip to Barnsley on Saturday evening for the Sky TV clash between the 2 struggling local rivals.

Wednesday were on course to put an end to a dismal run of defeats last Saturday before late mistakes cost them dear in a 3-2 home defeat to Bristol City.

The Owls are likely to be without attacking loan pair Jay Bothroyd and Mamady Sidibe as both remain sidelined with injuries.

Defensive midfielder Jose Semedo is also out of action and centre-back Anthony Gardner faces a late fitness test.

Winger Jermaine Johnson limped off late on last Saturday and will also be assessed ahead of the clash.

Better news for Wednesday is that defender Reda Johnson has returned to training following a lengthy lay off with a foot injury and could be in contention to return next weekend.

Barnsley’s main team news revolves around two influential midfielders. Jacob Mellis has been suffering with a dead leg and is a doubt but David Perkins made a substitute appearance last weekend at Leicester and may come into the starting line up after an injury lay off.

Former Wednesday striker Marcus Tudgay joined the Tykes on loan recently and could face his former side. He was a substitute last weekend but is in line to regain his place in the starting line up.

Both sides are in terrible form ahead of the local derby. Wednesday have now lost 7 in a row and have plunged into the relegation zone. They have only won 1 of 10 away matches in the Championship so far this season.

Barnsley have not won any of their last 10 matches and a 2 goal defeat on Saturday would see them fall below the Owls in the league table. They have only won 2 of 10 home matches this season and their last win at Oakwell was on the first day of September.

Wednesday have travelled to their near neighbours for 31 competitive matches, winning 9 and losing 14 of these. The Owls won on their last visit in January 2010, marking Alan Irvine’s first game as manager with a 2-1 win thanks to early goals from Tommy Spurr and Jermaine Johnson.
