Reach earns Owls a win in Portugal

Sheffield Wednesday’s first game of their week in Portugal ended in victory thanks to a fine strike from Adam Reach.

The Owls took on newly promoted Portimonense in Albufeira with the build up to reach peak fitness for the start of the Championship season the priority.

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood made his first appearance of the summer while Abdi, Hutchinson and Hooper, who all ended last season with injury concerns, were given useful second half run outs.

The only goal of the game came midway through a first half that the Owls enjoyed much the better of and it was a worthy winner. After good work by Fox and Boyd down Wednesday’s left side the ball was squared to Reach who let fly from 25 yards with an unstoppable shot.

Chances were few and far between in the second half with both sides making a number of changes in the heat and Carlos Carvalhal will be content with the way his side are progressing through their pre-season schedule.

Next up is a game against Farense tomorrow evening before rounding the trip off when they face Vitoria Setubal on Saturday.
