Rhodes leads Owls to safety

Away win for Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday guaranteed their Championship safety on Saturday thanks to a 1-0 away win at in-form Hull City. Jordan Rhodes, given a rare start due to injuries to Adthe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao, secured the points with a well-taken glancing headed goal from Jack Hunt’s cross just before the 20-mimute mark.

The Owls were boosted by the return of Barry Bannan and started brightly with Rhodes and Forestieri testing McGregor in the home goal early on.

Hernandez went close early in the second half and had a late goal chalked off for offside but other than that Wednesday, who had conceded 4 goals in the first hour in their last outing, managed the game well against a side that had found the net 9 times in their last 2 matches.

The victory moves the Owls above the Tigers into 16th place in the table and even if they were to lose their 3 remaining matches they cannot be caught by Burton, Sunderland, Bolton or Birmingham. They can play with more freedom in the final few games and put what has been a disappointing, injury-ravaged campaign behind them.
