Rumour mill: Takeover talks finally gather pace and Captain is linked with move

A proposed takeover of Sheffield Wednesday that has been rumoured for some time finally seems to be gathering pace as the story is being covered in national newspapers.

There have been rumours for many months now but at last the long drawn out saga could be reaching its conclusion as key men within the deal are making attempts to finalise a deal somewhere in the region of £50M.

Former Owls Chairman and still major shareholder, Dave Allen was said to have met with Geoff Sheard in Sheffield last week and had admitted he is looking to sell his shares as soon as possible providing the offer is right.

Sheard is heading a consortium that has been the frontrunner in the takeover talks for some time and it is said that if this group were to take the reigns at Hillsborough then Alan Shearer would be a candidate to take over from current manager Brian Laws although how likely this may be is unclear with the former England striker having recently ruled himself out of the running for the Blackburn Rovers job.

Elsewhere, Owls Captain Richard Wood has been linked with a surprise move to Coventry City. Wood, who is the Owls longest serving player is rumoured to be attracting the interest of the midlands club with a transfer fee of £1 Million being touted.

These stories would seem to be somewhat contradictory as, if Wednesday were on the verge of a takeover then surely they would not be considering cashing in on a player who has been a key part of the side in recent seasons and led a young back four well during a difficult campaign for the club last season.
